So I recently bought my first and probably last diamond ever through the James Hall for an engagement ring. I went on the lab extension and I noticed that while using their 360 view tool, you can often see the ID number on the belt.
I ask this purely as an academic training. What is to prevent people polishing the ID number from laboratory waxed diamonds and transfer them as extracted? I understand that most reputable suppliers will try to control their supply chain and prevent this so it would be quite difficult to get them certified. However, I imagine that since there are huge profit margins to be made, should some people buy and let them slip through certification?
